Epsom Oaks

The Oaks is a Group 1 race run over a mile and a half at Epsom, and is open to three-year-old fillies. It is the second-oldest of the five British Classics, inaugurated in 1779, after only the St Leger, and it takes place each year in early-June, the Friday before the Derby is run.

As with the Derby, there are a number of different versions of the Oaks around the world, and British-trained runners often take their chance in the French, German and Italian equivalents. The Oaks is the second of two Classics in the Flat season restricted to fillies, following the 1000 Guineas, and acts as the middle leg for the fillies’ Triple Crown.
